Silverstone car sale breaks all records

The Records were well and truly tumbling at the weekend’s Race Retro and Classic Car Sale.

Silverstone Auctions managed to achieve a fantastic sales rate, and successfully sold over 74% of the 77 vehicle lots that were on offer, as well as a host of automobillia items, making a premium inclusive total of £1.75 million, which is the highest sales total achieved at Race Retro in recent times.

More remarkable still was the fantastic conversion rate achieved in the sale that included 28 competitive cars, which other auction houses consider to be particularly challenging to sell in the current market.

The record sales figures were greatly helped by the sale of a magnificent 1958 Tojeiro Jaguar that went for a premium inclusive total of £286,000. This wasn’t the only car to reach six figures however, as a stunning Aston Martin DB4 Series II went for £170,000.

“We have worked hard on behalf of our vendors and achieved some excellent prices for both classic and competition vehicles,” comments Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions. “Everyone has been delighted and we are extremely proud of our achievements in our first visit to Race Retro.”

Figures were also boosted by a fine automobillia collection which generated a premium inclusive total of £180,000. This included a rare crash helmet used by legendary Formula One driver, the late Ayrton Senna, which sold for £71,500, significantly higher than its pre-sale estimate of £42,000 – £50,000, along with one of his race suits for £34,000.

Another record set during the auction was with the sale of a 1904 Oldsmobile ‘Curved Dash’ for £30,250, making it the oldest lot ever sold by Silverstone Auctions. Indeed, the sale included cars spanning more than a century in age.

Not only was the Race Retro Sale the first of the year for Silverstone Auctions, it was also the first sale that it has held away from its traditional home of Silverstone circuit. However, it will return to its Northamptonshire base for its next three sales – the Spring Sale on 16thMay, the Silverstone Classic Sale on 21stJuly and the Autumn Auction on 19thSeptember, before once again taking to the road for the NEC Classic Motor Show Sale on 17thNovember.
