Due to high maintenance cost 25% of motorists are driving illegally

A quarter of Brits have admitted that they could well be driving illegally thanks to the ever increasing cost of car maintenance. The number one cause for concern in bald tyres, followed by broken lights and driving a car that is overdue for its MOT.
The study conducted by www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, polled 1,209 UK drivers as part of research into the allocation of household finances.
The survey initially asked ‘Do you own a vehicle?’ to which 78% said that yes they did own a vehicle the most common being a car at 61%.
The study then asked, ‘Do you regularly service your vehicle?’ which established the following responses:
Yes, regularly – 23%
Only sporadically – 38%
Only for essential maintenance and repairs – 28%
No – 11%
The study then asked ‘Are you confident that your vehicle is in line with minimum safety standards/legal requirements?’ which generated the following results:
57% – Yes
24% – No
19% – Unsure
It asked those that answered ‘no’ or ‘unsure’ why they thought this was the case. Respondents felt that the biggest cause for concern was ‘bald tyres’ at 57%. ‘Missing/broken lights’ also came in highly at 44%. 4% admitted to driving at some stage in the past without valid insurance. Driving with an ‘overdue MOT’ accounted for 8%.
The study asked why they continued to drive despite knowing about the problems and the overwhelming reason was ‘cost’ at 77%. The second biggest stumbling block when it came to car maintenance was ‘finding the time’ to get booked in at the garage, accounting for 52% of the vote.
George Charles of www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk made the following comment:
“The cost of running a car is increasingly expensive. It seems that whenever the car goes into the garage for maintenance, the cost is astronomical. So it’s no surprise that a number of us fail to undertake regular servicing.”
He continued:
“It might seem to cost a lot but maintaining your vehicle is advised in order to try and avoid the shock of it breaking down. Paying for a service can seem expensive at the time but it will feel like opportunity missed when you’re stood on the roadside waiting for a recovery vehicle. More pertinently, it also makes sure that you’re on the right side of the law. The laws are in place for a reason, and road safety is the priority”.
