A British classic car enthusiast walked away with nearly two-thirds of a million pounds in early September, as he sold off his entire classic car collection at auction in Beaulieu, Hampshire.

Stephen Johns had spent many years accumulating the collection of classic cars and motorcycles, and had even exhibited his prized vehicles to the public as a small museum, the Exmoor Classic Car Museum, near to his Somerset home for a decade. Mr Johns had opened the museum after his retirement from a career at a Yorkshire pyjama factory, and after scooping a grand total of £667,128 at Beaulieu from the sales, he’s planning to retire once again – though much more comfortably this time!

Timeless Purchases

Some of the classic cars and motorcycles in Mr Johns’ collection dated back to the 1920s, and buyers flocked to Beaulieu to put in their bids. Every single classic car that went under the hammer that day found a new owner, and the most prized lot of the day was a 1927 Bugatti Type 40 Roadster which sold for an unbelievable £149,340.

As well as the Roadster, a 1972 Ferrari ‘Dino’ 246GTS Spider and a 1923 Rolls Royce 20hp Doctor’s Coupe were among the most highly sought-after classic cars of the day, fetching prices of £144,860 and £57,500 respectively. In total, ten cars and 13 motorcycles were on offer, as well as a wide selection of classic car and motorcycle memorabilia for the classic car fans whose budget didn’t quite stretch to a vehicle.

Don’t Forget the Cover

Each one of these classic cars and motorcycles are no doubt making their new owners very happy, but let’s hope that they’ve covered their prized purchases with classic car insurance.

A regular car insurance policy won’t cut it when it comes to classic cars, as these kinds of policies don’t cater to the very specific needs of classic cars, as well as classic car owners. Classic cars are driven less than ‘everyday’ cars and generally kept in much better condition, as well as more securely, so it’s important to consult a specialist classic car insurance company such as  Cherished Vehicle Insurance when looking to cover your classic car, to ensure that you get the level of cover that perfectly suits your needs.
