Motorists to be fined for having cars that are ‘too big’
If you possess a car that is too long or too wide to fit in the several parking bays over the narrow streets of the boroughs like Wyre in Lancashire or Chiswick in West London, expect to pay hefty fines of over £100.
These parking bays are being placed in very narrow streets in order to increase the safety of other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians along the street. But the key issue is that these parking bays are affecting many motorists whose cars are being caught in a pincer movement with fines and double tickets.
The parking bays have very stringent rules regarding the length and width of a vehicle that could fit into the parking bay. It is considered a violation of the rules if the vehicle is too long that it surpasses the parking bay line or too wide if it does not reach the line at a certain distance. This phenomenon is causing fewer and fewer cars from being parked legally on very narrow roads.
This parking problem is being intensified as we speak by other borough councils that are putting even more stringent rules by shortening the parking bay limits. While some councils allow some leeway along the parking bay lines, others may not do so at their discretion.
Many councils also argue the fact that motorists must be warned about the limits with previous notice before changes or updates. It is through this option that motorists will have a better understanding of where to exactly park their cars and where they shouldn’t park. One effective way would be to place warning signs along the parking bays and imposing the restrictions based on where those signs were placed.
This solution would help the parking bays do their purpose while motorists obey the restrictions with fewer barriers.
