Young motorists in York offered free advanced motoring lessons
In order to make the roads a safer place, many young people in the city of York are being offered advanced driving lessons at no cost.
This scheme is being called York Momentum and 300 drivers who are aged between 17 and 26 are going to be given a free place on the driving course operated by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
These places are being offered through a partnership between the Institute and the city council. This is the first sort of initiative of this kind that has been tested in the country and many parents have been welcoming the move.
Those parents who have lost children in motor vehicle accidents have been particularly supportive of the scheme believing that it will significantly improve the situation of safety on the roads.
Usually taking this test costs £40, however the Department for Transport have provided the council with money in order to pay for 300 people to do the course. The Cabinet member on the council for transport issues is Dave Merrett and he is commented, “We are pleased to be the first council to be offering this test to drivers in our area. Young people are at the highest risk on the road, and we think that this initiative will reduce their risk.”
